Social Media: a Tale of Two Conflicting Emotions
In the first year of running my gym (2012), one of my - ahem, much younger - gym members said to me, "You know, you really need to be on Instagram."
So, naturally, my response was "what's Instagram?" 🤦🏻♀️
She downloaded it on my phone, showed me how to set up a profile and I immediately felt:
- Overwhelmed: I just kinda sorta figured out Facebook. Now, on top of running by business, I have to learn another entire platform?
- Insecure: ok, I can figure out the how, but what the heck am I supposed to post and what if people don't like it?
- Conflicted: am I supposed to take focus away from coaching class members to take pics/videos - is that fair to them?
I ultimately had the realization that, if a core person in my audience and client base is telling me where she (and others like her) tend to look for gym updates, stories, etc., that's a really compelling reason for me to learn it and participate. FINE!
Once I realized that this new (to me) platform was a way I could tell stories about my gym members and show the personality of my gym and staff, I started to have a lot of fun with it!
Oh yes, I still often feel overwhelmed by the ever-changing algorithms, wonder why some posts get zero engagement and some get a lot (you all really like my dog, it seems), but I try to still keep it fun and hope that attracts like-minded people to interact with me!

Three Ways to Help Make Social Media...Burn You Out Less
So, you have zero desire to be a Kardashian...does that mean you can avoid putting your business on social media entirely? The short answer is: no (sorry).
"It's not about being a Kardashian, you know...every business has to be visible, but they don't have to be viral. And I think that that's kind of where we need to shift the mindset, right? You have to be visible, but you don't have to be viral."

💪 Coach's Cue: I didn't intend for these tips to rhyme, but I'm not mad they do...
Start with WHO
- You have to know who your customer is before you know where to find them
- Create 2-3 "customer avatars" and refer back to one or all when starting to create your social media marketing plan
- Avatar Worksheet you can use!
Pick just TWO
- After you know who you're talking to, pick two platforms (Corine suggests starting with Instagram, then adding another that fits your audience)
Then be YOU
- Post content that's authentic and represents who you really are and what values matter to you
- This will, inherently, attract the type of client whose values align with yours
